Security clash cancels Cheney in N.Y.

NEW YORK, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Vice President Dick Cheney withdrew from Thursday's New York City memorial ceremony after city hall and the Secret Service failed to agree on security.

The dispute centered on whether those attending the morning event would have to go through metal detectors as the Secret Service requires at events where Cheney is present, the New York Post said.

"We talked about it for days and kept trying to find some ways," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a news conference.

Instead, Cheney, at Bloomberg's request was to attend a memorial service later in the day honoring fallen Port Authority cops and employees.

During planning for last year's Ground Zero service, the White House ran into so many problems with city hall that presidential adviser Karl Rove and Bloomberg had to have a private dinner before the president's aides would sign off on New York hosting the 2004 Republican presidential convention.
