YANGON, Myanmar, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is not on hunger strike in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, according to the International Red Cross.
"She is well and not on hunger strike," a Red Cross communications officer in Myanmar's capital of Yangon said, after representatives met Aung San Suu Kyi for about an hour on Saturday.
Last week, the U.S. State Department said it had received credible reports she had begun a hunger strike in protest at her detention, the BBC reported.
Myanmar military rulers, who have held Aung San Suu Kyi in "preventive detention" since May 30 when her supporters clashed with the military, have denied the hunger strike allegations.
Washington's statement made last Sunday said it had "deep concern" for Aung San Suu Kyi's health, repeated a demand for her release and said the Myanmar government had "full responsibility" for the pro-democracy leader's well-being, the BBC said.
