WASHINGTON, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Al-Qaida has a "small presence" in the United States but there is no evidence of any active plans for attacks, USA Today reported Friday.

FBI agents across the nation continue to monitor an undisclosed number of suspected al-Qaida operatives who are believed to be involved in fundraising and recruiting for Osama bin Laden's terrorist network, said Larry Mefford, the FBI's assistant director for counter-terrorism and counterintelligence.

In several cases, federal authorities are conducting electronic or physical surveillance of potential suspects to try to learn more about their activities and their contacts.

"We do have evidence" of al-Qaida's presence in the United States," Mefford told reporters in a briefing at FBI headquarters. "It certainly exists."

Nearly two years after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, Mefford said, al-Qaida remains the "number one concern" among counter-terrorism officials trying to prevent another catastrophic assault on the United States.
