MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Hundreds of irate Minnesota small businesses claim telemarketers called collect from New Mexico -- then billed them whether they got the call or not.
A lawsuit on file Thursday from the Minnesota attorney general alleges a telemarketing combine called collect with an Internet services pitch, then billed the businesses $28.84 for the call months later -- even if they never accepted the charges or received the call.
What's more, some of the telemarketers allegedly got the charges reversed by identifying themselves with familiar names or as potential customers, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.
The Hennepin County District Court suit names Talk Too Me LLC of Sarasota, Fla., and American Directory Services Inc. of Nevada as defendants. They allegedly targeted mainly beauty parlors, restaurants and auto repair shops in and around Duluth, Minneapolis and Rochester.
At least 13 other states are investigating the firms, said Assistant Minnesota Attorney General Peter Marker but Minnesota is the first to take it to court.
