AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Amsterdam airport baggage handlers have uncovered a shipment of 2,000 baboon noses in a suitcase, clear evidence of mass slaughter of that endangered species.

The baggage handlers had noticed a "putrid smell" from an unaccompanied suitcase en route from Lagos, Nigeria, to the United States this week. Dutch inspectors told London's Independent the 60-pound suitcase was filled with decomposing baboon noses.

The Netherlands has become a major point of entry for trade in endangered and exotic species. Parts of endangered species, especially ivory tusks and rhino horns, are routinely discovered at the airport, but inspectors described this haul as "staggering."

Baboon noses are believed used as a traditional medicine. Police are still trying to find the owner of the suitcase.
