Cruise cut short; passengers sick

NEW YORK, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- A cruise ship cut short its Atlantic voyage to dock in New York City after about 20 percent of its passengers sickened with the norovirus.

CNN said that when the Regal Princess docked Tuesday morning, only two passengers were still sick. The ship was met by a team from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC said 301 of the ship's 1,557 passengers and 45 of its 687 crew members became sick with gastrointestinal illnesses.

Princess Cruises spokeswoman Julie Benson told CNN the ship began its voyage from Europe to New York in Copenhagen, Denmark, on August 18. She said the first symptoms of the norovirus showed up on the third day of the cruise.

The vessel also made stops in England, Ireland, Scotland and Iceland before skipping planned stops in Greenland and Newfoundland en route to New York.

Benson said preliminary results indicated an infected person probably brought the virus onboard in Copenhagen.
