N. Korea waffles on more nuclear talks

PYONGYANG, North Korea, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- North Korea has cast doubt on the prospects for more multilateral talks about its nuclear weapons program, a report said Monday.

The London Financial Times reported North Korea was not interested in further dialogue unless the United States dropped its "hostile policy" towards Pyongyang.

The comments appeared to break a tentative agreement to hold a second round of six-party talks to follow last week's meeting between the United States, the Koreas, China, Japan and Russia in Beijing.

In a statement issued through its state news agency, North Korea accused the United States of trying to trick Pyongyang into giving up its nuclear program and said Washington had toughened its stance at last week's talks.

The statement said: "This means the United States asks (North Korea) to drop its gun first, saying it would not open fire, when both sides are leveling guns at each other. Even a child would not be taken in by such a trick."
