LAHORE, Pakistan, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Pakistan's army had several officers in custody Monday on suspicion of links to Islamic extremist groups.
The London Telegraph reports the fear is the security arm of Pakistan, a Western ally in the war on terrorism, has been compromised by Afghanistan's former Taliban regime.
Pakistani military spokesman Shaukat Saulat said at least three mid-level officers are under scrutiny for disciplinary violations and suspected links to Islamic terrorists.
None of the officers was named.
The Taliban seem to have found new strength. They are now engaging in some of the heaviest fighting with U.S. and Afghan forces since the regime was toppled in November 2001.
A retired senior Pakistani military officer said the soldiers arrested might be linked to a group of 26 officers arrested in 1995 for planning an Islamist coup against the then-Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
