EU head warns Iran to accept inspections

TEHRAN, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Iran got another stern message Saturday from the European Union's foreign policy chief regarding its nuclear program.

Javier Solana, speaking to reporters in Iran's capital of Tehran, along with the Iranian foreign minister, warned Iran to accept snap inspections of its nuclear program, the BBC reported.

Solana said it would be "bad news," both for that country and the EU, if Iran did not sign an additional protocol to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The warning comes after a leaked report earlier this week that revealed the International Atomic Energy Agency had found traces of highly-enriched uranium at Iran's Natanz nuclear facility.

Last month, the EU warned it might review its ties with Iran over the nuclear issue.

Solana said only rapid progress in Iran's discussions with the IAEA would help avoid any unwelcome developments that might include putting on hold negotiations towards a trade and co-operation agreement with Iran, the BBC said.
