Woman thought dead in Baghdad calls home

NEW YORK, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- A New York woman reported dead in this week's Baghdad bomb attack has turned up very much alive.

U.N. officials had informed the family of Marilyn Manuel she was among the dead in Tuesday's bomb attack in Baghdad, the Daily News reported.

But she telephoned Thursday, saying she was at an army hospital with only minor injuries and no recollection of how she got out of the wreckage.

The grieving family already had been making funeral arrangements for her Thursday, her 54th birthday.

"I tried to remain calm after we learned she was one of the dead," her son Eric said. "We were racing to get the body back and to make the funeral and cemetery arrangements and try and make sense of this."

U.N. officials said it was unclear how Manuel was mistakenly identified as dead.
