U.S. seeking new Iraq U.N. resolution

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Secretary of State Colin Powell Thursday said Washington seeks language for a new Security Council resolution giving U.N. members a greater role in Iraq.

The intent of the measure would be to encourage other nations to join in sending troops to the war torn nation, particularly such nations as India, Pakistan and Turkey, but allow the United States to remain in overall control.

Powell met with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan at U.N. headquarters in New York and the two then met then with reporters before the coalition partners in Iraq, Britain and the United States, formally reported to the council on the situation in Iraq. In that formal meeting there was a repeated call by council members for an increased U.N. role in the nation.

Annan said he and Powell reviewed "what needs to be done to strengthen our security and to continue our operations."

Both men denied reports the world organization turned down increased security by American troops prior to Tuesday's deadly bombing of U.N. headquarters in Baghdad.
