Canada body-parts murder victim identified
UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Secretary-General Kofi Annan returned to his office at U.N. headquarters Wednesday, vowing, "We shall not be deterred" in helping post-war Iraq.
His return just more than 36 hours after a deadly bombing attack on U.N. headquarters in Baghdad killing one of his top aides, Sergio Vieira de Mello, and more than a dozen staffers and others, and wounding nearly 100.
Annan told reporters: "For people who went to Iraq with the only objective of assisting the people of Iraq to be killed in such a violent and senseless manner is something than none of us will ever comprehend." He added, "I think those who undertook this violent act are not acting on behalf of the Iraqi people."
As for security, the secretary general said: "The (British-U.S.-led) coalition has made some mistakes and maybe we have made some mistakes, too." But, he added "I don't want to get into finger-pointing."
He was to meet with the Security Council Wednesday evening to discuss the security of U.N. staff generally and in Baghdad specifically.
