Air Canada jet makes emergency landing

KEFLAVIK, Iceland, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- A smoke-filled Air Canada Boeing 747 made an emergency landing in Iceland with 282 aboard, a report said Tuesday.

The flight originated in Frankfurt, Germany, and was headed for Toronto with 269 passengers and a crew of 13, the Globe and Mail reported.

The jet's captain reassured frightened passengers, but for the next 71 minutes nobody was sure what the problem was. There was no report of panic.

U.S. Navy jets from the U.S. base in Keflavik flew toward the Air Canada plane while 150 members of a rescue team went on alert at the airport, along with doctors and nurses. Ships from the Icelandic coast guard were sent out to sea around Keflavik, which is about 35 miles from Reykjavik, the capital. A hard-driving rain made the situation more tense.

There were no injuries, and Air Canada said the passengers would be shuttled to Toronto early Tuesday.
