Woman convicted in salt overdose to appeal

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- A Scottish woman sentenced to four years in prison for poisoning a young girl with salt is going to appeal the conviction.

Susan Hamilton, 39, was convicted last month of feeding the child large doses of salt though a tube in her stomach. The 8-year-old victim, who cannot be identified under Scottish law, suffered permanent brain damage, the BBC said.

The girl had repeatedly fallen ill and was admitted to a hospital where doctors found extreme levels of sodium in her bloodstream, the BBC said.

Hamilton's husband, Neil, continues to maintain his wife's innocence.

"I have no doubts about my wife's innocence in all this," he told the BBC earlier in the week. "I have no suspicions about my wife, I have never had suspicions about my wife."

The Crown Office confirmed on Sunday the Appeal Court has been notified of an appeal, the BBC said.
