Former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin dead

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, described as age 78 or 80, died after being in a coma for a month, the BBC reported Saturday.

He died of multiple organ failure at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where he had been hospitalized since July 18.

His dictatorship in Uganda ended in 1979 when Ugandan exiles and troops from neighboring Tanzania drove him into exile.

Human rights groups and Ugandan government officials have expressed disappointment that Amin never faced trial for his alleged crimes.

Up to 400,000 people are believed to have been killed under his rule.

Amin's family recently appealed to the Ugandan Government to allow him return home, but President Yoweri Museveni said that Amin would face charges of human rights abuses if he returned to Uganda alive.
