Judge may delay California recall vote

SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Opponents of California's gubernatorial recall cheered Friday's ruling by a federal judge that might postpone the Oct. 7 election.

U.S. District Judge Jeremy Fogel issued the ruling in San Jose after hearing arguments that the election was in violation of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

Minority activists have contended the election was scheduled too soon and includes procedural changes that must first be approved by the federal government.

Peter Ragone of Californians Against the Costly Recall said they would continue with preparations for an October vote, but agreed that the election should not be held unless the "voters' right to a fair and equitable election" are preserved.
