British soldier killed in Iraq

BASRA, Iraq, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- The British Ministry of Defense says one British soldier has been killed and two others injured in a bombing attack in southern Iraq.

The soldiers were caught in an explosion from an "improvised explosive device" hidden near a lamppost, the BBC said.

At the time of the bombing, the soldiers were driving to a hospital in a clearly marked ambulance.

"We think it was detonated by remote control," coalition spokesman Lt. Col. P.J. Lewis told BBC News.

The two injured men were hit by shrapnel, military officials said. Their conditions were not thought to be life-threatening.

British military spokesman Maj. Charlie Mayo said: "This was a direct attack on a clearly marked ambulance, without any justification whatsoever."

He promised to work closely with police and local community to track down those responsible for the attack.
