May drop charges against accussed arsonist

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- An Ohio prosecutor says he may drop charges against Robert Lucky Patterson, who is accused of starting a fire that killed five college students.

Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien told WCPO TV he questioned the charges after reviewing a videotaped police interview with Patterson and interviewing five witnesses whose statements would be critical to gaining an indictment.

O'Brien said the aggravated murder and arson charges could be refiled at any time after they are dismissed. He did not return a telephone message to the TV station seeking comment Friday.

Police, fire officials and the FBI have been asked to forward all their files and evidence to the prosecutor's office, O'Brien said.

O'Brien wouldn't say what on the videotape has caused him to reconsider the charges. He was to meet with the victims' families Friday to discuss the case.
