Bali bomber to appeal death sentence

JAKARTA, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- The man convicted this week for the Bali bombing and sentenced to death plans to appeal, a report said Friday.

ChannelNewsAsia said lawyers for Amrozi Nurhasyim claim Indonesia's anti-terror law, which provides for tough action against convicted terrorists, was passed only after the October Bali attacks.

This likely will be the loophole which they will cite in their appeal against the death penalty a judge gave their client.

Amrozi, who said on Thursday that he wants to die a martyr, is said to have signed the document authorizing his lawyers to appeal his sentence. When he was sentenced earlier this week Amrozi laughed, turned to the court gallery and made two thumbs-up gestures.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's National Assembly Speaker Amien Rais, who is a key Muslim leader, said those convicted of terrorism should not be allowed to appeal.

He also called for a separate court to handle terror crimes in the future to speed up sentencing.
