Angry Toronto police chief vows crackdown

TORONTO, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- A weekend of "murder and mayhem" in Toronto has infuriated the city's police chief, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

At least four young people are dead and a dozen others injured, the Toronto Sun reported.

"Violence is the enemy that's tearing down our society," a frustrated Chief Julian Fantino told reporters Tuesday, minutes after hearing of Toronto's 31st homicide of the year -- a 19-year-old shot and killed.

"Starting immediately, a number of officers will be re-deployed (to) concentrate on guns, gangs and drugs," he said.

Fantino said in his years of experience, including eight years on the homicide squad, he has never seen so much violence.

Fantino said there has been a 70 percent increase in homicides from shootings so far this year.

Crime has peaked as a result of young people who are "obviously out of control" and "accountable to no one," Fantino said.
