CHICAGO, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- The AFL-CIO Executive Council has authorized an October general board meeting if there's a consensus regarding a presidential endorsement.
Political analysts told CBS MarketWatch.com if there is an endorsement, Rep. Richard Gephardt, the Missouri congressman and former House minority leader, would most likely8 be the only candidate to gain the 13-million-member organization's seal of approval.
"Right now it's Gephardt or no endorsement," Andy Stern, president of the Service Employees International Union, told reporters from CBS MarketWatch after the council's Wednesday meeting.
Stern, however, hasn't yet embraced Gephardt or any other candidate. He says the SEIU, one of the nation's largest unions, won't decide on which candidate to back until after a September meeting.
