Vote to confirm gay bishop is postponed

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- The final vote on whether to confirm the first Episcopalian gay bishop was postponed Monday, following allegations involving pornography.

The Washington Post said Episcopalian leaders delayed the vote shortly before it was to take place during the church's General Convention in Minneapolis.

The Rev. Gene Robinson, 56, who is openly gay, won a key vote Sunday when a majority of 835 priests and lay leaders in the convention's House of Deputies voted in favor of his confirmation.

The matter was to go before the convention's House of Bishops Monday. However, by mid-afternoon the bishops announced they would first meet in executive session. It was not clear when the vote would be held.

Episcopalian leaders in New Hampshire elected Robinson in early June to succeed the Rt. Rev. Douglas Theuner as head of the New Hampshire diocese when Theuner retires this fall. But that election must be confirmed by both chambers of the General Convention, which meets every three years.
