N. Korea threatens to derail talks

PYONGYANG, North Korea, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- North Korea threatens to derail the six-nation talks on its nuclear weapons if the United States brings it before the U.N. Security Council.

The warning, issued in Pyongyang, came a day after North Korea and the United States agreed to multilateral talks that will also include China, Japan, South Korea and Russia, CNN reported.

"The U.S. intention to bring up the nuclear issue on the peninsula for discussion at the United Nations at any cost is a grave criminal act to hamstring all the efforts of (North Korea) for dialogue," said KCNA, the official North Korean news agency.

Such a move, KCNA said, "is little short of a prelude to a war."

KCNA also said the talks will depend entirely on whether the Bush administration drops what it calls "a hostile policy towards the North." The White House dismissed the claim.

Washington has insisted on a multilateral forum for resumption of talks, CNN said.
