Toronto police chase injures 8

TORONTO, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- A high-speed police chase on Toronto's biggest street resulted in tangled crashes that injured eight people, a report said Friday.

The chase on Yonge Street ended in a horrific crash at a crowded downtown intersection late Thursday that injured eight innocent motorists and pedestrians. One man, a cab driver whose taxi was rammed in the side by the fleeing SUV, suffered massive head injuries and was clinging to life early Friday, the Toronto Sun reported.

Witnesses said the driver of the sport utility being pursued bailed out and was arrested in a dramatic gun-point takedown.

The Ford Explorer was being chased at speeds up to 90 miles per hour by two Toronto police cruisers when it slammed into the cab. That caused a chain reaction with two other vehicles, including a second cab.

All four autos ended up on the sidewalk in a crumpled heap, a light pole atop them.

Ambulance crews rushed seven men and a woman to local hospitals.
