Watergate claim by Magruder contested

LOS ANGELES, July 31 (UPI) -- An alleged conversation during which former President Richard Nixon ordered the Watergate break-in didn't occur, a report said Thursday.

Contradicting a suggestion by former White House aide Jeb Magruder Nixon personally ordered the Watergate break-in, the director of the late president's library said records show the conversation Magruder alleges he overheard never took place.

John Taylor, who runs the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace in Yorba Linda, Calif., said a review of the White House Daily Diary for the day in question and tape recordings of the president's conversations showed no telephone call or meeting, as Magruder described.

The Chicago Tribune quoted Taylor as saying: "The White House Daily Diary, which details all the president's meetings and telephone calls, shows that Ehrlichman did not meet or talk with President Nixon at any time on March 30, 1972."
