Philippines still facing threat of mutiny

MANILA, Philippines, July 31 (UPI) -- Philippine President Gloria Arroyo says her nation still faces the threat of another mutiny within its military.

National Security Advisor Roilo Golez told a Thursday congressional inquiry Sunday's failed mutiny by 300 soldiers was part of a larger plot to overthrow the Arroyo administration in favor of a military junta.

Golez told the Voice of America: "It suffices to say that we had things monitored, when we made some statements (about a potential coup plot) some cynical people tried to dismiss it as a provocation of the government to distract the public attention from other issues. Now it is apparent that intelligence work has been excellent."

Sunday's mutiny ended with the soldiers surrendering without incident at the Manila commercial complex they were holding.

Analysts told the VOA it's possible more senior coup plotters had deserted the young and disgruntled junior soldiers and officers who staged the mutiny.
