Prom to mark Queen's milestone

July 30, 2003 at 1:21 PM

LONDON, July 30 (UPI) -- Queen Elizabeth will attend a musical extravaganza marking the 50th anniversary of her coronation Wednesday, the BBC reported.

Accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, she will be honored at the BBC Proms venue Wednesday night.

They will be treated to a special rendition of sounds and songs from 1953.

The program includes Sir Michael Tippet's Dance, Clarion Air and William Walton's Coronation Te Deum which were specially composed for coronation year.

Mezzo soprano Catherine Wyn-Rogers will sing Sir Edward Elgar's Sea Pictures in a program containing British and commonwealth works.

In 1953, a number of composers wrote music not for the coronation ceremony itself, but simply in celebration of the occasion.

Five choirs and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sir Andrew Davis, will entertain the royal audience.
