FBI digs for body near Chicago ballpark

CHICAGO, July 30 (UPI) -- FBI agents are digging near U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago Wednesday for the remains of a person missing for more than 20 years.

FBI Special Agent Sonya Chavez said the agency received the tip several weeks ago, before the All-Star Game was played at the ballpark, that a body could be buried at the spot.

It wasn't feasible for the FBI to dig then, Chavez said.

Tuesday, agents cut about 18 inches deep with a backhoe. Chavez said agents began examining the soil by hand and will continue until they determine if a body is buried there. She estimated the process will take about three days, the Chicago Tribune said.

Onlookers wondered out loud if the body could be that of Jimmy Hoffa, the 62-year-old former Teamsters president who vanished July 30, 1975, exactly 28 years ago.

Chavez would not discuss whom agents were trying to unearth.
