DNA to determine if woman is Shannon

TIPTON, Ind., July 30 (UPI) -- DNA testing will determine if a 23-year-old woman is the Shannon Sherrill who vanished from her Indiana home when she was 6.

Shannon's father, William Sherrill said police have told him they intend to conduct DNA testing on the woman who called the Sherrill family Saturday to say she thinks she might be Shannon.

The father said the woman had been ready to come to Indiana Sunday but abruptly, just as police got involved, the communication stopped.

"I would like to find out why she just didn't show up," he told the Indianapolis Star.

Shannon disappeared 17 years ago as she played outside her mother's home in Thorntown, Ind.

Indiana State Police spokesman Sgt. David Bursten said Tuesday state and local police investigating the case had nothing new to report.

However, he added that the case was one of the most unusual he had ever handled.
