YANGON, Myanmar, July 29 (UPI) -- The nation of Myanmar strongly criticized the United States Tuesday for imposing economic sanctions on the country formerly known as Burma.

The sanctions, announced Monday, result from Myanmar's imprisonment of pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.

The sanctions ban all imports from Myanmar for three years, and freeze the military government's financial assets in American banks.

President George Bush, in announcing the sanctions, said they are designed to send a clear message to Myanmar's leaders that the detention of Nobel Peace laureate Suu Kyi and the "repression" of the Myanmar people are unacceptable.

Suu Kyi was arrested May 30 after a clash between her supporters and pro-government groups.

Channelnewsasia said Myanmar Foreign Minister Win Aung called the sanctions "one-sided, unilateral actions taken by some without any regard for the people."

Win Aung said Myanmar was unfazed by the sanctions, adding releasing Suu Kyi might trigger unrest in the country.
