Montreal arrests 200 WTO protesters

MONTREAL, July 29 (UPI) -- Montreal police are bracing for a second day of mayhem Tuesday after arresting 200 World Trade Organization protesters.

Approximately 500 protesters converged on the ministerial meeting of the WTO Monday and began rampaging, smashing windows, spray painting graffiti and overturning trash cans and mail boxes.

Police then declared the protest illegal, and began surrounding the group. Some protesters poured vinegar on rags to use against tear gas, but none was used, the Globe and Mail reported.

The destruction was unleashed mainly by a dozen to two dozen anti-globalization protesters, who targeted stores from corporations such as the Gap, Burger King or the Bank of Montreal. The windows of a Canadian Forces recruitment center were smashed as well.

One man saw his Porsche windshield get smashed. He grabbed one attacker by the neck but several others knocked him to the ground.
