LOS ANGELES, July 26 (UPI) -- Formerly conjoined twins from Guatemala celebrated their second birthday, which was their first as separate individuals.
Maria de Jesus Quiej Alvarez and Maria Teresa Quiej Alvarez had a birthday party Friday at UCLA's Mattel Children's Hospital.
Several members of the separation surgery team shared cupcakes with the twins along with members of Healing the Children, the nonprofit group that brought them to California, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.
Maria Teresa was in the hospital recovering from surgery to implant a fluid-draining shunt in her head. Her sister was treated for a convulsion and has been staying with a volunteer.
Maria de Jesus was described Friday as "very lively and all smiles," the Times reported. She smiled when she heard her parents on a speaker phone wishing the girls a happy birthday and speedy recovery.
Doctors have not yet said when the twins would return to Guatemala.
