SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, July 26 (UPI) -- Thousands of Cubans turned out to mark the 50th anniversary of the attack on a military barracks that marked the beginning of Fidel Castro's revolution.
The attack on the Moncada barracks was re-enacted by several hundred Cuban children Saturday, the BBC said.
On July 26, 1953, the then 26-year-old Castro led about 120 fighters on a raid. His force was crushed by the 800 soldiers at the outpost and Castro was jailed for about two years.
National celebrations include fireworks, several galas and a special wreath-laying ceremony by Elian Gonzalez, the little boy who sparked a row between the United States and Cuba three years ago.
Elian, 9, will place the wreath at the grave of Jose Marti, the 19th-Century independence leader buried in Santiago de Cuba, the BBC said.
Castro was scheduled to address about 10,000 guests late Saturday, the BBC said.
