BAGHDAD, July 23 (UPI) -- U.S. military officials Wednesday defended their decision to kill rather than capture Saddam Hussein's sons.

The commander of U.S. ground forces in Iraq said the assault that killed Uday and Qusay Hussein Tuesday in Mosul was a staged operation that opened with grenade launchers and ended with the firing of nearly a dozen missiles.

Asked why the mission didn't focus on capturing the brothers for intelligence purposes, Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez told a news conference there was fear the brothers might have had an escape tunnel.

"They resisted the detention and the efforts of the coalition forces to go in there and apprehend them, and they were killed in the ensuing gunfight and the attacks that we conducted on the residence," Sanchez said.

Troops used bullhorns initially to call the men out, and two unsuccessful sorties into the mansion resulted in the show of fire power after six hours.
