Wozniak creates electronic ID tags

SAN FRANCISCO, July 21 (UPI) -- The co-founder of Apple Computer Inc., Stephen Wozniak, has developed an electronic identification tag system to help keep track of people, pets and property.

Wozniak -- whose new company is called Wheels of Zeus - told the New York Times the device has been in development for 18 months. Wheels of Zeus (the name is derived from the Woz in Wozniak) has initial agreements with two American makers of consumer electronics to produce the first commercial systems based on technology called WozNet. The first products will be introduced next year.

He told the Times the device is a simple and inexpensive wireless network that uses radio signals and global positioning satellite data to keep track of a cluster of inexpensive tags within a one- or two-mile radius of each base station.

Wozniak said he'll include a home-base station with the ability to track up to hundreds of the small tags that can be attached to people, pets or property.
