Israelis rescue kidnapped cabdriver

JERUSALEM, July 16 (UPI) -- Israeli forces have rescued a kidnapped Jerusalem cab driver missing for five days.

The military, police and the Shin Bet security service combined efforts to free Eliyahu Gorel, 61, who was seized from his taxi last Friday in an Arab neighborhood in East Jerusalem, the military said.

The security forces arrested three suspects late Tuesday, and then freed Gorel, who was described as being in good health, the military said. There was no official word on who was behind the kidnapping, but Israel television said it was criminals seeking to win favor with militant Palestinian factions.

Israel had been demanding Palestinian security forces help in finding Gorel but there was no indication that they played any role in freeing him, Voice of America reported.

Tuesday, a Palestinian fatally stabbed an Israeli man walking along the Tel Aviv beachfront and Israeli officials said it demonstrated a lack of action by the Palestinians to halt violence.
