100 feared killed in Indian cloudburst

NEW DELHI, July 16 (UPI) -- More than 100 people were feared killed in their sleep when a flash flood swept through a hilly village in northern India Wednesday.

Most of the victims were laborers who were working for a construction company that was engaged in building a hydropower project in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh state.

A sweeping cloudburst resulted in flash floods in Pulia rivulet washing away people in their sleep and destroying property at around 3 a.m. local time.

Rescue workers have been sent to the region where most of the victims are missing and feared dead. At least 25 injured people have been admitted in hospitals.

A cloudburst is a sudden burst of heavy rain, mostly associated with thunderstorms. It is usually localized and restricted to a small geographical area.
