Bangladesh ferry victims recovered

DHAKA, Bangladesh, July 13 (UPI) -- More than 150 bodies have been recovered from the Bangladesh ferry disaster, the BBC reported Sunday.

Some of the bodies were so badly decomposed they had to be buried without identification.

More than 400 people are thought to have died when the boat was sucked into a whirlpool and sank late Tuesday.

Although the boat was licensed to carry only 300 passengers, reports said double that number were on board.

Some bodies may still be trapped inside the boat, but rescuers believe many could have been swept further down the river toward the Bay of Bengal.

Heavy monsoon rains and strong winds have hampered the search at the disaster site, where the Padma, Meghna and Dakatia rivers converge.

The exact number of missing might never be known. Estimates from officials vary from 200 and 800.

About 200 people swam to safety or were rescued.
