TEHRAN, July 7 (UPI) -- An Iranian foreign ministry official says Tehran successfully tested its long-range Shihab-III missile, capable of hitting targets more than 800 miles away.
The announcement came Monday, two days before Mohammed el-Baradei, the chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency, is due to visit Tehran to discuss Iran's nuclear program.
Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asafi said el-Baradei's visit is "important" to efforts to boost cooperation between Iran and the IAEA, rejecting threats the European Union would impose a trade embargo on Tehran in case it failed to sign a supplementary protocol on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
El-Baradei is expected to hold talks during his one-day visit with Iranian nuclear chief Gulam Reza Agha Zadeh. El-Baradei said Saturday Iran should sign the supplementary protocol allowing more thorough inspections of its nuclear program to pave the way for lifting international restrictions on its nuclear technology.
Iran has said repeatedly its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes but the United States has accused Tehran of developing nuclear weapons and has been pressuring Russia to sever its assistance.
