Explosion heard at Japanese nuke plant

FUKUI, Japan, July 4 (UPI) -- An explosion at a Japanese nuclear facility Friday did not release any radiation, Mainichi Daily News reported.

The explosion occurred and smoke was detected at the facility designed to incinerate waste with low-level radioactivity on the Fugen advanced nuclear reactor compound, officials said.

Although the incineration facility stands within the nuclear reactor compound in Tsuruga, it contains no spent nuclear fuels.

Officials of the Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute that runs the plant said "an abnormal level of incineration" at the facility caused the explosive sound.

After making an investigation of the facility, officials found that no fire occurred in the wake of the explosion.

The Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute plans to dismantle Fugen over the next 15 years as the plant's operations have proved too costly.
