Iraqi women demonstrate in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, July 3 (UPI) -- Hundreds of Iraqi women took to Baghdad streets Thursday to demand inclusion in shaping their country's political future.

Hind Wasfi Taher, spokeswoman of the Iraqi Women's League, which organized the demonstration, told United Press International the protesters "want a review of the country's personal statute law as to grant women more rights," and "all laws that distinguish between men and women should be abolished."

The demonstrators gathered in front of the Palestine Hotel where the headquarters for U.S. forces are located.

She also called on U.S. forces to restore electricity and water services and guarantee security for Baghdad residents who are suffering from continued chaos.

Fawziyeh Omar, a physiotherapist working in a Baghdad hospital, said an Iraqi government should be immediately formed to impose security and called for the arrest and trial of former President Saddam Hussein, who disappeared after Baghdad fell to the U.S. forces April 9.
