FBI agent contradicts UMass president

BOSTON, June 30 (UPI) -- A retired FBI agent said he tried to question University of Massachusetts president William Bulger in 1995 about the disappearance of his brother.

Retired agent John Gamel told The New York Times a few days after Bulger's brother, James, fled in 1995 after being tipped off to a secret federal indictment, he tried to question William Bulger, then the Massachusetts Senate president.

Gamel said he was told by an aide that William Bugler was too busy to talk to him, so he left his telephone number.

The state legislator called but he wasn't interested in answering questions, according to Gamel.

During a hearing of the House Government Reform Committee June 19, William Bulger testified the FBI never sought to question him about his fugitive brother.

James Bulger has been charged with 21 murders that occurred while he was an FBI informant from the 1970s to the 1990s.
