WASHINGTON, June 28 (UPI) -- President George Bush said Saturday he was pleased Congress accepted his principle of choice for seniors in the Medicare prescription drug benefit bills.
In his weekly radio address, Bush said that in both the House and Senate bills, seniors who want to stay in the current Medicare system will have that option. Plus, there is a new prescription drug benefit.
Seniors who want enhanced benefits, such as coverage for preventive care and a cap on out-of-pocket costs, will have that choice as well, Bush said.
Seniors who like the affordability of managed care plans will be able to enroll in such plans. Low-income seniors will receive extra help so all seniors will have the ability to choose a Medicare option that includes prescription drug benefits.
Until the new Medicare drug program takes full effect in 2006, the plan calls for help to seniors through a discount card that would reduce prescription drug costs.
