Mad sheep surfaces in Canada

LASHBURN, Saskatchewan, June 26 (UPI) -- A flock of sheep in Saskatchewan was seized for slaughter over fears of an infection similar to mad cow disease.

Agriculture officials removed 25 sheep from the farm after a ewe from the flock tested positive for scrapie, which is related to bovine spongiform encephalopathy or mad cow disease.

The nervous system disorder is found in sheep and goats, and causes trembling, weight loss, scratching and death.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is now tracing all the other sheep from the infected flock, the CBC reported.

Health Canada said there is no known danger to humans from scrapie.
