U.S. attacked convoy on Syrian soil

WASHINGTON, June 24 (UPI) -- A U.S. attack on an Iraqi convoy last week actually occurred on Syrian soil, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

U.S. forces also wounded five Syrian border guards during the attack along the Syrian border against a convoy of vehicles military officials believed was carrying one or more senior members of the ousted Iraqi government, the Washington Post reported.

Three of the Syrians were treated by U.S. medical personnel for what defense officials described as injuries that were not life-threatening.

It's not immediately known if the already strained relations between Syria and the United States were damaged further.

The Bush administration has alleged Syria is a state sponsor of terrorism and accused Damascus of harboring fleeing Iraqi leaders.

Pentagon officials scaled back their assessment high-ranking members of Saddam Hussein's government were in the convoy.

Forensics personnel have begun performing DNA tests on human remains from the convoy to determine who was in it,
