BOSTON, June 24 (UPI) -- Republicans in Boston are poorer by $1 million Tuesday after donating it to President George W. Bush's re-election campaign.
Some 600 guests paid $2,000 each to attend the private event, featuring Vice President Dick Cheney, who previewed the upcoming Bush campaign, taking credit for winning wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and pressing a domestic agenda focused on tax cuts and education reform.
Gov. Mitt Romney hosted the fete at the home of GOP stalwart Richard Egan, founder of EMC Corp. and former U.S. ambassador to Ireland.
About 50 protesters were kept more than a mile away from the event, the Boston Herald reported.
The gathering followed a similar Cheney fundraiser in Virginia and came on the same day Bush hoped to raise $4.5 million by appearing at a New York event.
