AMMAN, Jordan, June 22 (UPI) -- Representatives of the "Mideast quartet" meeting in Jordan, expressed enduring support Sunday for the road map proposed to bring peace to the Middle East.
The United Nations, the European Union and Russia, and the United States are expected to negotiate a transfer of security power over Gaza and Bethlehem from Israel to the Palestinian Authority, CNN reported.
At the meeting in Amman, Jordan, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said, "We have to keep moving forward."
Powell said he was "anxious" for the Palestinian Authority to take control of Gaza and for Israel to withdraw its forces.
Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou, whose country currently heads the EU's rotating presidency, said, "It's a historic opportunity. We must take it, and we here are determined to help."
In the hours before the news conference, Israeli forces killed two Palestinians, including one Hamas leader.
