TUCSON, June 22 (UPI) -- Still out of control, the huge wildfire in Arizona kept generating 150-foot flames over the weekend but slowed as it hit previously burned territory.
The Arizona Daily Star reported that firefighters began to make some headway as the fire covered more than 7,500 acres, extending a fire line that previously had been impossible to lengthen.
Helicopters and air water tankers Saturday dumped three times as much fire retardant and water on the flames since all the days since Tuesday's ignition put together.
About 900 firefighters are working to contain the flames, keeping some residences wet while others burn.
Sprinklers and fire hoses have been set up around a residential complex of Mount Bigelow, which was saved from last year's 30,000 acre Bullock fire.
This conflagration has consumed a ski lift, damaged lookout towers and gobbled more forest. Along its southeastern flanks, workers have cleared fire lines by hand, burning fuel to protect a Rangers station.
