LONDON, June 19 (UPI) -- Britain says pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi is being held in a "notorious jail" on the outskirts of Rangoon.
Until Thursday's announcement by British Foreign Office Minister Mike O'Brien, the opposition leader's whereabouts in Myanmar, formerly Burma, were unknown.
O'Brien told the BBC: "I am appalled to learn today, on her 58th birthday, that Aung San Suu Kyi is being held in the notorious Insein Jail on the outskirts of Rangoon in a two-room hut."
Despite British calls for her release from "draconian" detention, Myanmar Foreign Minister Win-Aung ruled out freeing her in the immediate future.
Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained since May 30 when her motorcade was intercepted.
Aung, speaking to reporters, criticized U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell's description of the Myanmar military regime as "brutal".
The BBC said Aung told reporters: "We are not a brutal people. We have loving kindness for everybody."
