Two planes collide, four dead

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla., June 18 (UPI) -- Investigators combed the water off south Florida Wednesday looking for bodies from a in-flight collision.

The planes collided about 7:50 p.m. a half mile off Deerfield Beach, the Miami Herald said. Preliminary reports suggested two Cessna aircraft flew toward each other, attempted evasive actions and went wing-to-wing.

Witnesses said one plane, heading north, clipped the wing of another, which was heading south. The southbound plane came tumbling down. The other craft continued north and hit the water 50 feet from the pier.

As darkness fell, Coast Guard and Broward Sheriff's Office aircraft flew over black water with thermal imaging cameras and a 100,000-watt light, looking for survivors. Four bodies were recovered from the water by a private boater, according to a Coast Guard spokesman.

Broward Sheriff's Office divers continued to dive into the night to search for victims.
